Car audio marketing is loud: “3000 watts”, exotic materials, mirror-finish boxes. Real quality is quieter, and after years of building EMMA competition cars at Ethos Audio we evaluate every product — including our own — against the same practical framework. Here is how to judge equipment before you spend.
1. Read the specifications like a sceptic
Honest brands publish RMS power (continuous), measured at a stated distortion level and impedance — not “peak” or “max” figures. On speakers, look for sensitivity, frequency response with tolerance (±3dB), and impedance curves rather than single flattering numbers. A spec sheet that hides its test conditions is telling you something.
2. Build quality you can feel
Pick the product up. Quality amplifiers have substantial heatsinks, clean board layouts and solid terminals — like the gold-anodised casework on our ET Series amplifiers. Quality speakers have rigid cast baskets (not stamped tin), tidy surrounds, well-finished cones and connectors that grip. Converters and processors should feel dense, with proper sockets, not rattly plastic.
3. Materials serve the sound, not the brochure
Carbon fibre, silk domes and copper phase plugs are legitimate engineering choices — when applied where they matter. In our E-Class Carbon series, carbon-fibre cones are used for their stiffness-to-weight ratio in midbass and midrange drivers, which keeps the cone behaving like a piston at high output. Be wary of exotic materials used only on the visible parts of a product.
4. Listen — properly
The only spec that matters is what reaches your ears. In a demo, bring music you know intimately and listen for: vocals that sound like a person, not a speaker; cymbals with shimmer but no splash; bass with pitch, not just thump; and a stable stereo image in front of you. Listen at low volume too — good equipment stays interesting when quiet.
5. Check the support behind the product
Quality includes what happens after purchase: a real local warranty, spare parts availability (tweeters get damaged, grilles get lost), and a dealer who can actually install and tune what they sell. 6. Competition results are the honest benchmark
Sound quality competitions like EMMA exist precisely to separate marketing from performance — trained judges, standardised scoring, and no interest in your brochure.
